Magic Wand Aspect Patterns
“Magic Wands,” as I like to call them, are aspect patterns made up of positive minor aspects that are not often spoken of in mainstream astrological lingo, but I use them when I look for magical elements, talents, and abilities, as well as how we can tap into our “higher self” and our spiritual qualities, in my readings.
There are three different types that I am working with, and they are made up of the harmonic 5ths (or quintiles), 7ths (or septiles), and 9ths (or noviles). Harmonic charts can be generated that show a shift in planets on the native’s zodiac wheel, forming different outcomes based on which harmonic is represented. These can be used to fill in gaps of a native’s propensities and gifts, and what might be going on “under the hood,” so to speak.
It is rare to find Grand Quintiles (a pentagram, or 5-pointed star aspect pattern), Grand Septiles (heptagram, or 7-pointed star), or Grand Noviles (enneagram, or 9-pointed star) in natal charts, though they can more easily be found in synastry when two people come together to “complete” one another. These people can feel like our missing puzzle piece and instantly recognized as a soul partner of some kind; a karmic link activated.
But, instead of working with the “grand” versions of these, I am sticking to aspects made of threes for this purpose and focusing on the natal chart only instead of synastry. These three points make a triangle, of course, and that triangle has an apex, or a point of energy condensation; I am referring to these harmonic triangle aspects as “magic wands.”
Similar to yods – which have a somewhat negative reputation due to the combination of two sextiled planets both quincunxing (inconjunct) the apex planet, thus creating a challenge to the native to use the positive aspect at the base to manifest harmony from the apex planet’s discombobulated energy – magic wands are actually elegant and magical because they are all positive, creative, and often spiritual aspects, working in synchronistic harmony together. The native only needs to become cognizant of its presence to be able to activate the power contained within a magic wand and manifest accordingly.
The Quintile Magic Wand
The Quintile Magic Wand, or the Innate Talent Wand, also referred to as a Golden Yod, is made up of two planets in quintile aspect at the base, with both biquintile to a third planet at the apex. This aspect is created from dividing the zodiac’s 360 degrees by 5, creating aspects at 72° (with a 2° orb) - the harmonic 5th in astrology. When a chart contains five neatly arranged quintile aspects around the wheel, it forms a pentagram; quite appropriate, then, to equate some magical qualities to these aspects, as the 5-pointed star is associated with clarity, power, insight, and divine guidance across multiple elements of society and different cultures, from religions and belief systems, to corporations, and even to the military.
Quintiles are wonderful creative problem-solving and intuitive aspects that indicate natural talent and even prodigious abilities in the natal chart. They indicate powerful abilities with pattern recognition, often derived though insight gained through play activities – it’s tapping into the Source for downloaded guidance. They remind me of Luna Lovegood, the quirky witch from the Harry Potter stories. She remains nonplussed as she comes up with interesting workarounds and pulls solutions out of thin air and then goes about her business in perfect equilibrium and with a cheery disposition. Very Uranian. Putting three of these together, instead of five, gives a directional quality to this energy – it gives it action, and bestows the native with the gifts of manifestation. The apex planet is the focus of the magical energy and – by way of the two (usually) biquintiles pointing to the apex planet – indicates our power manifesting in the world outside of ourselves; it involves others.
These have the quality of Parvati – Hindu goddess of universal power and benevolent mediation between the worshipper and the divine – and can show how the native will be most effective at manifesting creative solutions or effecting prodigious qualities.
The Septile Magic Wand
The Septile Magic Wand, or the Spiritual Power Wand, is made up of two planets in septile at the base, with both biseptile (sometimes triseptile) to a third planet at the apex. Dividing the 360° zodiac wheel by 7 produces an uneven number of 51.428, and is typically rounded up to 51.43 degrees, with an orb of 1°, to produce a septile. These aspects indicate subtle, spiritual energy flows between the planets and an innate sensitivity to such energies by the native, as well as a deep wellspring of knowledge that these types of alternative realities both exist and hold power in our world in unseen ways. Like the Innate Talent Wand, putting three of these septiles together, instead of seven, gives a directional quality to this energy – it gives it action, and bestows the native with the gifts of manifestation. The apex planet is the focus of the magical energy.
Septile energy is considered similar to Neptune and aligned with non-earthly reality. Therefore, septiles are best worked with in non-physical, non-linear, non-earthly terms – “decoupled from earthly grounding.” Spiritual lessons and insights can be received and harnessed for higher purposes with these aspects..
The harmonic 7th in astrology signifies mystical inspiration and spiritual insight and guidance, both for us and through us, in service of others. It also plays a large part in creativity, specifically falling into the creative flow where many artists swear they download direct inspiration from Source to create their masterpieces, whether that’s physical artistic creations or music or any sort of contribution to the aesthetic world. Discipline and devotion to the spiritual impetus is a strong factor in this harmonic as well.
This energy reminds me of Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series as he sacrifices himself in service of the greater good, always providing spiritual guidance and insight to those he has offered himself to.
These aspects have the quality of Shakti in the Hindu pantheon – the divine power of the feminine and fundamental cosmic energy. These can show how the native will be most effective at utilizing their spirituality or creative inspiration.
The Novile Magic Wand
The Novile Magic Wand, or the Universal Life Force Wand, is comprised of a novile between two planets at the base, with each forming a binovile (or quadrinovile – a tri-novile is actually a trine) to the same apex planet.
The 9th harmonic in astrology signifies what we are growing toward, our higher selves, what we are becoming; it shows the future. The 9th house in astrology reflects this as well, as it represents higher wisdom, higher law, philosophy, spiritual intuition and insight, enlightenment, and even psychic abilities.
Noviles indicate divine energy that is embedded within us that we need to bring forth into being. This is like the ancient quote from the Gospel of Thomas: “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.”
There is a quality of inevitability to noviles – they are your future. And, they can be used for good or evil, so it is up to us to harness the energies for the highest outcomes for all, most importantly for our own evolution. We can manifest peace and happiness here, or we can manifest strife and chaos. This is our future; this is what we are becoming; this is the goal of the chart. It’s very similar energy to the North Node in this way.
I liken this magic wand to Harry Potter himself, as he was growing toward his highest potential as an inevitable outcome throughout the entire series, with the impetus upon himself to bring forth his power in order to save himself, or to destroy himself and everyone else if he failed to step into his role as the prophesized wizard.
Hindu (Vedic) astrologers say that the 9th harmonic signifies the ideal marriage partner, as the 9th harmonic indicates perfection and harmony and is aligned with our higher selves and the element of inevitability.
The Universal Life Force Wand is aligned with Brahman in the Hindu pantheon – the embodiment of the universe and force that is in all things, including us humans – our souls (atman) are each connected to the brahman, the ultimate reality, we are all part of the One.
Using Your Power For Good – or Evil
Of course, any of these aspect patterns can be harnessed for either good or evil. There are ample write-ups on the internet describing how Hitler had several Golden Yods – Quintile Magic Wands – and look evil what he did with it. (If Eris is included in his chart, his form a perfect pentagram.) There are several other natal aspects that also, when taken into full context, can show their influence on his decision to choose evil and megalomania, so while I find it difficult to say, “the Golden Yods made him do it!”, I do see how his gifts for manifestation and innate talent for influencing others came into play with his overall disposition.
These wands work in whatever way we direct them – meaning, if we utilize lower energetic expressions of these planets, a negative outcome can be manifested. The trick is to be diligent about how we express the planetary energies, which means it’s not always possible or easy to whip these out on the fly. Sometimes we may need to do some meditation on what we want to manifest before we employ these gifts. Having a lack of conscious intention (desire + will) that is unaware of all the forces involved, or a deliberate unleashing of darker sides of the forces involved that causes harm to others, is how things can turn to dark magic.
Like anything astrological, we all have free will. What we do with our gifts is, ultimately, up to each of us.
“The stars impel; they do not compel” – meaning the energies of the planets influence us, but what we choose to do with those energies is always up to each of us. The power is in our hands.
“An’ it harm none, do what ye will.” – Wiccan Rede
